Short answer: structural parts usually interchange across the four A-body divisions — frames, floor pans, cowls, firewalls, door shells and most glass. Styled panels almost never do. Front fenders, hoods, grilles, quarter panels and tail panels were drawn separately by each division, so a Chevelle quarter will not make a Cutlass, no matter how similar the car looks from ten feet away.

That one distinction — structure shared, skin not — explains nearly every interchange question we get asked, and it is the thing most sellers gloss over.

Which cars are actually A-bodies?

From 1964 through 1972, four GM divisions built intermediates on the same A-body architecture:

  • Chevrolet — Chevelle, Malibu, El Camino
  • Oldsmobile — F-85, Cutlass, 442
  • Buick — Special, Skylark, Gran Sport
  • Pontiac — Tempest, LeMans, GTO

They are not one continuous run, though, and this is where people get caught. There are two distinct generations, and they share very little with each other:

  • 1964–1967 — the first generation, all body styles on a 115-inch wheelbase
  • 1968–1972 — restyled, and split by body style: 112 inches for two-doors, 116 inches for four-doors and wagons

Nothing structural crosses that 1967/1968 line. And within 1968–1972, a two-door and a four-door are different cars underneath despite wearing the same badge. If a listing says “fits 1964–1972” without qualifying body style, treat it as a listing written by someone who has not measured anything.

What genuinely interchanges

Within the same generation and the same body style, these are the parts that normally swap between divisions:

  • Frames — shared within generation and wheelbase. A 1970 two-door frame is a 1970 two-door frame whether it came from under a Chevelle or a Skylark.
  • Floor pans, trunk floors, cowl and firewall — common stampings. This is where most restoration metal is needed and where cross-division sourcing genuinely saves you.
  • Door shells — usually interchange within generation and body style. Trim mounting holes and interior hardware differ by division, so you may be swapping the skin’s furniture over.
  • Glass — windshields and backglass are typically common within generation and body style. Door glass usually follows the door.
  • Rear axles and much of the suspension — brackets and spring rates vary, but the hard parts frequently cross over.
  • Roof skins — shared within a given roofline. Note that hardtop, post coupe and convertible roofs are not interchangeable with each other.

What does not interchange, no matter what the seller says

Each division styled its own exterior. These parts are division-specific and, in most cases, year-specific too:

  • Front fenders — different contours, different headlight openings, different trim lines
  • Hoods — division-specific, and often different again between base and performance trims
  • Grilles, headlight bezels and front valances — the single most division-specific area of the car
  • Quarter panels — this is the one people most want to be wrong about. Wheel arch shape, body line and tail treatment differ between divisions. They are not the same panel.
  • Tail panels, tail light housings and bumpers — division and year specific
  • Dashes, gauge clusters and most interior trim — each division did its own

Why this matters more for Buick and Oldsmobile

Chevelle is the best-supported A-body in the hobby by a wide margin. Almost every panel is reproduced, and reproduction quality is generally good. That is not true for the other three.

For Skylark and Gran Sport and for Cutlass and 442, a lot of the division-specific sheet metal was either never reproduced or is reproduced poorly. Which means for exactly the parts that don’t interchange, a solid original from a dry climate is often the only real option — and the shared structural parts underneath are where you get to shop across all four divisions.

That inverts how most people search. They look for Buick parts and find nothing. The better approach is: source the styled panels as division-specific originals, and source the structure from whichever A-body donor is cheapest and cleanest.

How to check before you buy

  1. Confirm the generation — 1964–67 or 1968–72. Never assume a range crosses it.
  2. Confirm the body style and wheelbase — especially on 1968–72, where two-door and four-door differ by four inches.
  3. Get the casting or part number where one exists, and check it against an interchange reference rather than against the seller’s description.
  4. Ask for a photograph of the actual part, not a catalogue image — and specifically ask for the mounting faces and any repair areas.
  5. For structural metal, ask what the donor was. A panel from a dry-state car and the same panel from a salted-road car are different products at the same part number.

That last one is the whole reason we only stock dry-climate metal. The interchange chart tells you whether a part fits. It tells you nothing about whether it is worth putting on your car.
